Sea Level Rise Around The Maltese Islands Causes Concern

Jul 1 2023 Share

In the early hours of the morning, at around 2:50 am, an unusual event took place near the Veccja Bridge in Xemxija and other places around the islands. The sea level suddenly rose, catching many residents and bystanders off guard. To make matters worse, some cars parked near the sea were dragged into the water. The unexpected occurrence sparked concern and even panic among those in the vicinity.

Initial reports stated that there was no evidence of a tsunami or an earthquake that could have triggered such a dramatic rise in the sea level. Authorities were left puzzled and realised that further investigation was necessary to uncover the cause behind the incident.

As discussions ensued, it became evident that the sea level had been a topic of conversation throughout the year. Due to lower than usual sea levels in recent times, when the tide finally came in, it did so with greater force, inundating areas that are typically not affected. This phenomenon is known to occur in the Mediterranean Sea, and it seems that the Xemxija area and other areas around the country fell victim to its unexpected consequences.

Residents and witnesses of the event were left shaken by the sudden and powerful surge of water. It serves as a stark reminder of the immense power of nature and its ability to catch us off guard. While the incident caused significant inconvenience and property damage, it is fortunate that there were no reports of injuries or loss of life.

Local authorities are now focusing on assessing the extent of the damage and are also considering implementing measures to mitigate such incidents in the future, such as providing warnings and guidelines to residents and visitors regarding the potential dangers associated with fluctuating sea levels.
