The Ministry for Gozo has given details about an upcoming regeneration project in the zone know as ‘taċ-Ċawla.’ The Government said that “this project aims to improve public spaces and provide additional social housing.” Approved by the Planning Authority in 2019, ‘Taċ-Ċawla Project’ will contribute to the modernisation of the area while addressing the needs of the local community.

According to a Press Release by the Ministry for Gozo the ‘taċ-Ċawla’ regeneration project encompasses two primary objectives: the revitalisation of public spaces and the provision of social housing. By allocating a portion of the land for social housing, the project aims to assist families in need of support while prioritising the development of recreational areas for the residents of the area.

Gozo Minister, Clint Camilleri, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating that it will create a public space that is in line with contemporary standards. He emphasised the government’s commitment to modernising public areas and expanding recreational spaces throughout Gozo and other Maltese localities.

The holistic project will encompass a land area of 3,750 square meters, with a mere 330 square meters, or less than 9%, allocated to social housing.

The remaining space, totalling three acres, will be transformed into a vibrant recreational area featuring a playing field, outdoor gyms, a water feature-based recreational zone, and extensive landscaping. Furthermore, the existing football pitch will be modernised and expanded by 150 square meters to 850 square meters, allowing for improved training sessions for the Victoria Hotspurs football club and the local community.

The social housing block will consist of eight apartments, ensuring that families in need of affordable housing have access to suitable accommodations.

The project design places a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability and preservation.

The Ministry for Gozo has assured that no trees will be removed during the regeneration process. The project will enhance the existing greenery by adding additional trees and bushes.

Furthermore, the implementation of a new lighting system and other facilities will contribute to the overall enjoyment and safety of children and residents in the area.

Opposition spokesperson for Gozo and PN MP Alex Borg, is spearheading the efforts to stop the project. In the past few days, Borg sent a petition to the Prime Minister and took it to Parliament, urging the Government to stop the work. A total of 181 of 273 residents living in a social housing estate in the area, signed the petition.

In addition to this project, the Ministry for Gozo plans to revitalise another abandoned area in the vicinity. A 775-square-meter plot located on Triq Anton Tabone will be transformed into an additional open space for families to enjoy.
