Following the ongoing invasion of Ukraine, Russia has just been banned from participating in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.

This announcement follows increasing pressures from the broadcasters across Europe, with the European Broadcasting Union going on to say that no Russian act will participate in the contest this year.

‘The Executive Board of the EBU made the decision following a recommendation earlier today by the Eurovision Song Contest’s governing body, the Reference Group, based on the rules of the event and the values of the EBU.’

This also follows around nine countries calling to exclude Russia from the event. These included Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Ukraine itself. Russia was also excluded from the UEFA and FIA Formula 1.

Speaking at a political rally, Prime Minister Robert Abela opened up about his experience in Brussels in regards to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Asked a question about his participation in the meeting of world leaders, Abela emphasised the bewilderment and surreal experience in discussing virtually with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

He also discussed worries of increases in exported products but promised that Malta will keep prices, including energy related, stable during the crisis.

Abela said that Malta will be delivering aid to Ukraine, mostly in the form of medicinal help to support the defensive effort.  He also highlighted the importance of not labelling all Russian people as being in favour of the effort. Quite the contrary, said the Prime Minister, as he spoke about how many oppose the invasion of Ukraine.

“Thank you friends. Thank you for your messages. I am listening.” While relatively vague, Franco Debono’s most recent Facebook post has been causing widespread speculation on the criminal lawyer’s return to politics.

Welcoming just under 800 likes and a flurry of comments requesting that Debono return to Malta’s political circle. Earlier this week, Nationalist Party leader Bernard Grech stated that he does not exclude the possibility of Debono contesting the election under the PN ticket, revealing that he speaks with the lawyer ‘on a regular basis.’

Debono most notably broke ties with the Nationalist Party in 2012, voting with the Labour opposition against the government budget of that year. He had alluded to re-joining the party on a number of occasions since then.

Could we be seeing Franco Debono on a PN ticket in 2022?
