Speaking ahead of the European Political Community Summit in Granada, Spain, European President Roberta Metsola said that this meeting is important because of the investment going into our continent’s geostrategic peace, security and stability.

‘Ukraine and Moldova – we should start accession negotiations with these two countries once all conditions are fulfilled.’

Metsola said that she will meet Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Vovayi Pashinyan, saying that she will not only offer assistance with the humanitarian crisis in regards to persons leaving Nagorno-Karabakh, but will also:

‘with the integration of refugees in Armenia, and I will also invite the Prime Minister of Armenia to address the Plenary Session in a couple of weeks.’

‘I see the European Political Community as the reason to bring all allies together. If we are not together, if we are not together as a continent, then actors from elsewhere will try to influence our continent. That’s my first point.’

‘This is an opportunity for everybody to come together as has been the case with the negotiations that have been taking place.’

An audience member called the statements, which suggested that anyone born with Down syndrome or any disability, as insulting and putting further stigma on those suffering.

Meanwhile, Oliver Scicluna, CEO of Aġenzija Sapport, took to social media to say that the comments made by Jacob (the audience member) accurately explain how comments implying that persons with disabilities suffer from such conditions are a result of sin only increases the stigma.

‘No, I believe that certain discourse cannot be tolerated further, because it is otherwise useless to clap about rights and inclusion.’

The Commission for the Rights of Persons With Disability also released a statement, saying that:

‘The disability sector has come a long way from these antiquated ideas and these opinions are completely detrimental to the acknowledgement that persons with disability should be given the respect they are entitled to as equal citizens in Malta.’
