European Parliament President Roberta Metsola took to social media yesterday to commemorate what would have been Daphne Caruana Galizia’s 59th birthday had she not been assassinated on October 16th, 2017.
‘Instead, we must finish what she started’, continued the EP President. ‘To expose the truth. To find justice. To hold those responsible and those who tried to cover it up accountable. To finalise a fit-for-purpose EU anti-SLAPP law.’

This comes after Malta placed second as the most challenging European countries for journalists grappling with legal harassment, following Poland. Malta registered a staggering 88 ‘strategic lawsuits against public participation’ in the last decade.
Daphne was assassinated outside her home in Bidnija when a car bomb placed in her leased Peugeot 108 exploded.
