European Parliament President Roberta Metsola took to social media yesterday to commemorate what would have been Daphne Caruana Galizia’s 59th birthday had she not been assassinated on October 16th, 2017.

‘Instead, we must finish what she started’, continued the EP President. ‘To expose the truth. To find justice. To hold those responsible and those who tried to cover it up accountable. To finalise a fit-for-purpose EU anti-SLAPP law.’

This comes after Malta placed second as the most challenging European countries for journalists grappling with legal harassment, following Poland. Malta registered a staggering 88 ‘strategic lawsuits against public participation’ in the last decade.

Daphne was assassinated outside her home in Bidnija when a car bomb placed in her leased Peugeot 108 exploded.

Another night of inspections on Maltese roads saw various local entities coordinating together to surveil the adherence to law related to driving, prohibited substances and immigration, amongst others.

In a large number of inspections, it was found in the absolute majority of those stopped that they were adhering to the law, with those not doing so having to face immediate consequence.

The work was coordinated between the police corps, Transport Malta, and LESA. Due to the inspections related to immigration, the Detention Services Department also played a role in the surveillance efforts.

During the night in question (25th of August to 26th of August 2023), 267 vehicles were stopped in various roads, most notably in Furjana and Valletta.

Searches on vehicles, breathlyzer tests, Y-plate inspections, document verifications and residence permit checks for irregular immigration were carried out. The rule breaking discovered varied from license-less driving and simple drug possession.

The entities in question appeal to the public to adhere to the law so that our roads are more secure. The work shall be continuing, a statement by the entities stated.

Study Exposes Smartphone Dependency In Parenting

Aug 26 2023 Share

An astounding 43% of parents are utterly clueless about how previous generations managed to raise children before the advent of smartphones.

This alarming statistic emerged from a UK-based study conducted by OnePoll.com, in collaboration with the renowned phone company Three UK, leaving experts flabbergasted.

This new research has spotlighted the unprecedented role that these pocket-sized devices play in modern parenting. The study delved deep into the habits of 1,000 respondents with children aged 6 and under, revealing a dependency on smartphones that has left many scratching their heads.

Gone are the days of relying on traditional parenting wisdom, as the study uncovered that moms and dads now resort to their trusty smartphones for a wide array of parenting tasks. Whether it’s shopping for their little ones or seeking advice on child-rearing conundrums, these handheld gadgets have become an integral part of the parental toolkit. Astoundingly, parents reportedly use their smartphones up to a staggering 77 times a week in their quest for guidance.

In fact, an overwhelming 61% of respondents attested that their smartphones were the most helpful tool in their child-rearing journey, overshadowing age-old wisdom passed down through generations.

The study found that a staggering 34% of parents have had to increase their data plans to accommodate their skyrocketing phone usage. In an era of boundless connectivity, most parents confessed to exceeding their data limits by a substantial five gigabytes each month.

The study uncovered that a whopping 36% of parents attribute their data usage to downloading and streaming content for their little ones. With an astonishing average of 12 hours of streamed content each week, it’s clear that screens have taken center stage in the world of modern childhood entertainment.
