Robert Aquilina has resigned from the NGO Repubblika, where he served as Honorary President, following a police inquiry linked to a private family matter.
In a public statement, Aquilina said he was asked to speak to the police regarding a family situation but categorically denied any wrongdoing.
He confirmed that a magistrate refused a request by the Police Commissioner to issue an arrest warrant against him and that he was sent home with his family after the interview.
Citing respect for his family’s privacy, particularly that of his three minor children, Aquilina said he would not discuss the matter further publicly.
He criticised the police leadership for allegedly leaking private information, noting that media were waiting for him upon his arrival at the police station.
Aquilina stated that he was stepping down from Repubblika with immediate effect to protect his family’s privacy and to avoid having the situation used against the NGO’s work.
He also announced the suspension of his role within the Fondazione Falcone and its General Council.
