Prime Minister Robert Abela, Opposition Leader Bernard Grech, and Speaker of the House Anġlu Farrugia laid floral tributes yesterday evening in remembrance of the victims of the 1919 Sette Giugno uprising.

In a speech delivered during the ceremony, Speaker Farrugia reflected on the events of 7th June 1919, when widespread frustration over economic hardship and British colonial rule led to violent protests and four Maltese citizens lost their lives during the unrest.

The University of Malta has achieved its highest global ranking in seven years, placing 1,622nd out of 21,462 institutions in the 2025 Global 2000 list by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR).

This positions UM among the top 7.6% of universities worldwidE 533rd in Europe.

UM has improved from last year’s rank of 1,705, despite more institutions being assessed, and remains Malta’s highest-ranked university.

CWUR’s rankings, released on the 2nd of June, are known for their objectivity and transparency.

UM’s strong performance enhances its global reputation and boosts the value of its degrees for both students and graduates.
