Crime victims to receive financial compensation

Crime victims to receive financial compensation
May 27 2021 Share

Justice Minister Edward Zammit Lewis announced that financial compensation will be awarded to victims of crime for the damages they suffered. Zammit Lewis stated that victims should never have to be burdened with additional troubles following trauma, and this applies especially well to any financial problems. The Minister stated that compensation will be calculated in such a way as to be viable and clarified as separate from awarded damages by Courts of Justice.

Victims will be able to apply for this compensation through the government’s new mechanism which will balance out what the victim lost and adequate compensation after having attended court sittings. Agency for Court Services CEO Eunice Grech Florini stated that these amendments are a step in the right direction for the effectiveness and accessibility of Courts.

The Minister explained that ‘someone who has been a victim may keep a record of their expenses while the case has been ongoing since they are called as witnesses to help the Police at the stage when the Prosecution is presenting its case in court… therefore why should the victim also incur more expenses? This has nothing to do with the damages a crime victim may request from Court through an insurance company.’

German scientists claim they can help prevent blood clots from COVID-19 vaccines

German scientists claim they can help prevent blood clots from COVID-19 vaccines
May 27 2021 Share

A team of German scientists have allegedly isolated the culprit behind why some people who were given AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines develop blood clots. Claiming they can tell manufacturers how to improve the vaccine to avoid this potentially life-threatening but rare instance, the scientists stated that the key is in the adenovirus.

This common cold virus is sued to deliver the spike protein of the COVID-19 virus into the body. The mRNA vaccines developed by Pfizer BioNTech and Moderna do not use this delivery system and there have been no reports of blood clots linked to these jabs.

In a pre-print which has not yet undergone peer review, the scientists claim that the problem lies in the adenovirus’ entry into the nucleus. J&J is allegedly already in contact with the team of scientists, despite other medical experts stating that the idea is still a hypothesis.

US intelligence to intensify COVID-19 origins study

US intelligence to intensify COVID-19 origins study
May 27 2021 Share

President Joe Biden has ordered US intelligence to input more into studying the origins of COVID-19. The US President added that China will be pressed into participating in a full investigation of the pandemic’s unsure origin. Despite having received an alleged up-to-date analysis of the origins of COVID-19, he asked US intelligence to redouble efforts and come to a definitive conclusion as to how the transmission occurred.

The virus was first detected in Wuhan, China in late 2019. Ever since then, it took the world by storm and killing 3.5 million people and infecting around 168 million. Biden’s administration is putting pressure on China to be transparent about the outbreak. Biden’s request also involved asking the intelligence to investigate the unlikely possibility of COVID-19 being traced back to Chinese laboratories, a concept which Biden has so far minimised its credibility as a fringe conspiracy theory.
