2020 marked a new record of illegal hunting in Malta. 210 protected birds were illegally shot last year. This fact was noted by the European Commissioner for the Environment as he voiced his concern about the number.
2018 was previously the record year for illegalities where the number stood at 114, the number almost doubled in 2020. These are of course only the reported birds which are found by the authorities.
A number of birds will not be recorded since they might be collected by hunters for their own reasons like taxidermy or even for food.
