Speaking to Fabian Demicoli on an episode of MaltaDaily’s ‘The Interview’, Parliamentary Secretary for Reforms Rebecca Buttigieg urged for more sustainable planning and organisation of infrastructure.
‘Every street in Gżira is occupied with construction work’ said the Parliamentary Secretary. ‘This means that if you’re a couple with a pram or an elderly person with a cane, you need to walk in the middle of the road.’
Calling this unacceptable, Buttigieg went on to state that it is time for this country to find a way to sustain the construction projects currently ongoing but with much better organisation.
She recommended timelines to which projects should be liable to for completion and thus reduce inconvenience.
She pointed to the public consultation on contractor licensing as one of the initiatives the government is taking to address this issue, as well as the sustainable development which attempts to safeguard the character of the locality.
‘We need to find that balance – to continue sustaining the ongoing investment whilst making sure that it all makes sense and does not not increase inconvenience for residents of both Gżira and Malta at large’ she concluded.
