READ: Labour Party reveals full manifesto with 1,000 electoral proposals

During this evening’s Labour Party manifesto launch, Prime Minister and Labour Robert Abela, together with party President Ramona Attard and a number of others speakers saw their party’s electoral manifesto unanimously approved.

The 1000-strong electoral manifesto covers a range of national issues which include the country’s digitisation, the economy, environment and a number of other proposals. Abela stated that such a manifesto promotes fairness in society, pledging that if he is given the trust of the people in his first mandate, he will see to the implementation of all proposals.

Proposals include a pledge of scooter licenses for 16-year-olds, an investment into the digital sector and an aggressive national push for electric vehicles.

Releasing their new manifesto, the Labour Party pledged to kick off consultation processes to have 16-year-olds made eligible for scooter licenses. 

The youth would be able to sit for driving exams for scooters with engines not larger than 125cc. The proposal forms part of the government’s attempt to address the traffic issue in Malta. 

The party also pledged a climate and mobility app to facilitate car pooling and promote more sustainable transportation. The party went on to propose more ideas towards the electrification of transport in Malta.

During this evening’s Labour Party manifesto launch, the party’s electoral proposals where unanimously approved, with 1,000 electoral proposals covering issues such as the economy, ‘a Digital Malta’ and sustainability, amongst others. With regards to the latter, the Labour Party put forward a set of proposals related to the electrification of transport in Malta.

A proposal which stood out in this regard was the introduction of green license plates for electric vehicles in order to facilitate the recognition of such vehicles, allowing them to benefit from advantages such as access to particular zones, reserved parking spaces and the use of bus lanes. The manifesto continues to promote the use of electric vehicles, with one of the proposals being an investment in 1,200 charging points over a period of three years. Charging points will also be stationed in various residential areas and public parking spaces across Malta.

Furthermore, the Labour Party pledges to incentivise purchasing of electric vehicles through the strengthening of financial grants and a pledge that all public services shift to the use electric vehicles in the next five years.

This evening, the Labour Party’s set of electoral proposals were approved during the party’s manifesto launch event. Addressed by Labour Party president Ramona Attard, PL Deputy Leader Daniel Jose Micallef and Prime Minister Robert Abela and others, the Party put forward a number of electoral proposals going into the March 26th election.

Amongst others, the Labour Party has presented a number of proposals in favour of ‘a digital Malta’, with the first proposal in this manifesto section highlighting that a Labour government will invest in digital infrastructure and human resource while prioritising quantum computing, deep tech, artificial intelligence and robotics. Similar to one of the Nationalist Party’s main electoral pillars, that being the ’10 economic sectors’, Labour pledges to invest further into the country’s digital landscape by focusing on digital connectivity solutions such as artificial intelligence and the ‘internet of things’.

For individuals seeking private courses in coding, the Labour Party is also proposing a €1,000 refund for those applying. With regards to diversification, a proposal in particular mentions development in the gaming sector, with initiatives including a ‘boot camp’ aimed at attracting start-up businesses in sectors such as eSports and video game development.

Highlighting his party’s ‘track record’, Robert Abela stated that with the trust of the people, he will see that the entire plan is enacted during his first mandate.

During his speech, Robert Abela also mentioned the coming out of the pandemic, Malta had the largest economic growth in Europe and the lowest rate of unemployment.
