From a Facebook post by Marine Biologist Alan Deidun earlier this week a specimen of angular rough shark (‘pixxiporku’ or ‘ġurdien’) was rescued after being trapped in a rockpool by a group of friends in the coast of Gozo.
After rescued the group released the shark back into the open water. This species reputedly brings bad luck and is thrown back into the sea by fishers.
Alan Deidun added, “I Believe its actually the other way round, that humans bring bad luck to sharks.”

This year’s Islands Cleanup campaign was relaunched by the Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleansing, in partnership with Saving our Blue, Project Green, and the Cleansing and Maintenance Division.
The campaign was officially launched with the participation of students from St Michael’s Foundation, thanks to an initiative by student Thomas Gatt.
Some months ago, Thomas approached the Minister for the Environment with the idea of starting an environmental organisation led by children, for children.
This year’s edition began earlier than usual, with a cleanup at Mistra Bay. Around 143kg of waste was collected by children and employees from private firm Gambling.com Group, working together with Ministry staff. They were joined by Minister Miriam Dalli and Parliamentary Secretary Glenn Bedingfield.
Minister Dalli praised the growing interest in the campaign, especially from young people. She urged the public to take part, while emphasising the importance of proper waste disposal and continued awareness around illegal dumping.
Parliamentary Secretary Bedingfield highlighted the campaign’s role in Malta’s broader Vision 2050 sustainability strategy, reinforcing the importance of daily cleanliness and public engagement.
The campaign welcomes participation from companies, schools, NGOs, and other organisations. Equipment is provided, waste is sorted and recycled, and participants are awarded certificates in recognition of their efforts.

At the age of 72, local Cikku Hili got a tattoo of his favourite ever DJ – Tiesto.

Choosing @titotanti_tattoo as his artist of choice, Cikku showed his appreciation for the music artist by getting a back shoulder tattoo of the artist’s logo.
This followed his son taking him to see the DJ for his birthday as a surprise, highlighting that even at such an age, one could still focus on what one loves!

Puttinu Cares Good Friday Marathon will be broadcast live on all Maltese TV stations on April 18, 2025, from 9am to 3pm and again from 9pm to midnight.
Founded to support children with cancer, Puttinu Cares has grown to assist both children and adults by offering free accommodation near major hospitals in London to patients undergoing treatment abroad.
Thanks to the ongoing generosity of the Maltese and Gozitan people, the organisation recently purchased a new Central London property, just 10 minutes from Great Ormond Street Hospital.
The building received planning permission for an additional floor, bringing the total number of Puttinu apartments in London to 49.
The new building will be named in honour of the late Dr. Victor Calvagna, whose legacy of compassion continues to inspire. Donors are commemorated with plaques placed inside the apartments, a lasting symbol of gratitude and solidarity.
