The cigar jellyfish (Olindias phosphorica), identifiable by its distinctive red cross-like pattern, has been sighted in the waters of Xemxija. This largely transparent species, which appears annually at this time, features around 200 short tentacles. Despite its menacing appearance, the jellyfish delivers only a mild sting, treatable with vinegar.
Residents and visitors can safely enjoy observing this unique marine creature. For those interested in more information, visit the downloads section of the Spot the Jellyfish website (Ocean.mt/jellyfish/public).
Daniel de Castro shared this discovery on his social media platforms. The appearance of the cigar jellyfish highlights the rich marine biodiversity in our waters, encouraging both locals and tourists to explore and appreciate the unique sea life in Malta.
