Pro-life doctors urge MEPs to vote down abortion bill

Maltese MEPS have received an open appeal by pro-life doctors to vote against a European Parliament report that calls on EU states to grant abortion rights to women. The report by Hungarian socialist MEP Pedrag Matic was met with resistance by Doctors For Life, despite the report having no legislative power to influence national law. The report urges member states to ‘protect and enhance women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights.’

The so-called Matic report shows how some EU member states still adhere to highly restrictive laws prohibiting abortion except in specific instances. Matic called the fact that women have to seek clandestine abortions or carry the pregnancy to term a violation of their human rights. The vote will be taken later on in June.

Only 20% think a Eurovision song in Maltese can have a chance

A survey carried out by newspaper Illum revealed that just less than 20% of Malta’s population think the country should compete in the annual Eurovision Song Contest with a song using Maltese lyrics. The survey revealed that the majority of the population, at 45%, believe Malta could only have a shot at winning the contest when competing with a song in English. 35.2% responded with being unsure about the prospect.

Further statistics reveal that nearly half of the population (49.9%) think Malta should still compete in future contests, despite the island never managing to win. 32.5% stated that Malta should drop out of the competition, with a remaining 17.5% stating they are unsure. What do you think?

1 COVID-19 case registered with 3 recoveries

Malta has registered 1 new case of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours from 1,432 swab tests, while 3 patients have recovered. No deaths were registered in the past 24 hours. This information was announced by the official Facebook page of Malta’s Ministry for Health.

As of Tuesday 8th June 2021, 558,320 vaccine doses were administered of which 329,000 were 1st doses. 238,807 people are currently fully vaccinated.

To date, Malta has registered 30,572 COVID-19 cases in total, of which: 30,083 have recovered, 419 died and 70 are still active.

WATCH: More videos of huge crowds on Sliema promenade despite restrictions

Footage on TikTok shows yet another instance of a huge crowd on the Sliema promenade. The video shows Sezer Yilmaz, who uploaded the video, going around interviewing the large number of people, revealing that many of the youth were foreigners. It is unclear as to how many of the people in the crowd were foreign.

Many took to the comments to express their frustration with the situation. Some stated that a third wave is imminent following these activities as no one is wearing masks and breathing on each other. Others called the acts insensitive and embarrassing as they do not seem to be abiding with the health restrictions.
