Prime Minister’s sister-in-law announces she will contest general election

Prime Minister’s sister-in-law announces she will contest general election

Alison Zerafa Civelli, Bormla’s mayor and Prime Minister’s wife Lydia Abela’s sister, has announced she will contest the upcoming general election on the Labour Party ticket in the second district.

Posting to Facebook on Sunday morning, Zerafa Civelli revealed her running for the general election. She joins a very long list of candidates on this same district – including Glenn Bedingfield, Oliver Scicluna, Byron Camilleri, Clyde Caruana, Chris Agius, Joe Mizzi and Robert Abela himself.

‘As a woman, a teacher, mayor and activist, I always did my best to carry out all that you have taught me, carry it out in practice and do what’s good for our families’ the post read, referring to the locality as a whole.

‘How could I therefore reject your call and the Labour Party’s call to take the next step and work for our district?’

PN call for the removal of Education Minister following damning report

PN call for the removal of Education Minister following damning report

An ethics report found that a criminal investigation should be launched into a €15,000 contract given by Education Minister Justyne Caruana to close friend Daniel Bogdanovic after he lied about having done the work he was paid for.

Commissioner for Standards in Public Life George Hyzler details in a damning report how the minister abused her power in awarding a contract to Bogdanovic, who is a former footballer.

The report shows how although Bogdanovic was paid handsomely to review the National Sports School, he had not even written the report himself, going on to repeatedly lie about it when questioned.

Meanwhile, the Nationalist Party called on the education minister to immediately publish a Standards Commissioner’s report into the breach of ethics, even though this is impossible for her to do.

The reports of the Standards Commissioner are never made available to the person under investigation, because they are only handed to the Speaker of the House.

The report by Hyzler says there was a concerted effort to hide Bogdanovic’s ‘incompetence’, with the work in fact having been done by one of Caruana’s consultants, Paul Debattista.

“It is my understanding that Minister Justyne Caruana used her discretion in a way that constitutes abuse of power, and broke with the ministerial code of ethics, by giving preferential treatment to Daniel Bogdanovic, and in particular by giving Bogdanovic a contract by direct order that he was neither qualified for or competent to carry out,” the report concludes.

Increase in cannabis access can lead to more car accidents say doctors

Increase in cannabis access can lead to more car accidents say doctors
Dec 12 2021 Share

The government is being called on by doctors in Malta to tighten legislation relating to driving under drug influence, as traffic accidents could become more likely due to easier cannabis access.

Doctors for Road Safety (D4RS) drew on recent studies to highlight that cannabis is associated with a rise in traffic related deaths as the cannabis reform is set to be passed by parliament this upcoming week.

D4RS pointed to Colorado and Washington in the US in a new statement published Saturday, showing how traffic deaths involving drivers testing positive for cannabis doubled since the drug was legalised.

The cannabis reform drew much controversy from several groups and parties.

The NGO pointed out that cannabis results in impaired judgement, poor motor coordination and reaction time. Studies have also found a direct relationship between THC levels in the blood and impaired driving ability.

The current bill will allow people to carry up to seven grams of the substance for personal use and to grow up to four plants in their homes.

This also comes after the PN submitted an urgent request to discuss an anti-cannabis petition. Despite this, if the law goes through, it is not clear whether cannabis will still qualify as being a drug of abuse.

Weeks ago, Prime Minister Robert Abela did however state that people will not be able to drive whilst under the influence just like they wouldn’t if they were under alcoholic influence.

According to Maltese law, driving licenses are not to be issued for drivers who are dependent on psychotropic substances or who regularly use them, whatever category of license is requested.

Bernie Sanders was spotted at the Malta International Airport striking his iconic meme position and it’s as glorious as one would think.

A photo sent to this news room shows a huddled up Sanders at the departures section of Malta’s airport.

We are currently not sure if he was actually here in Malta or if he was waiting for a connecting flight.

But it does seem as though his sitting position, which took the world by storm as one of the best memes known to the internet, is more like a signature posture for Sanders.

He was missing his iconic jacket and mittens however, but the face covering and the crossed legs were present, giving us a taste of the viral sensation up close.
