Olympic Games Rings Mounted On Eiffel Tower

Olympic Games Rings Mounted On Eiffel Tower
Jun 10 2024 Share

Paris Olympics organizers unveiled the Olympic rings on the Eiffel Tower on Friday, marking 50 days until the Summer Games. The rings, crafted from recycled French steel, are displayed on the south side of the 135-year-old landmark, overlooking the Seine River, each measuring 30 feet in diameter.

Thousands of athletes will parade on boats along a 3.7-mile route on the Seine during the opening ceremony at sunset on July 26. The Paris Olympics, running from July 26 to August 11, will feature many iconic venues, with the Eiffel Tower, known as La Dame de Fer (The Iron Lady), playing a prominent role.

Men’s and women’s volleyball matches will be held at the foot of the 330-meter monument, in the temporary Eiffel Tower Stadium on the Champ de Mars, accommodating nearly 13,000 fans. The Olympic and Paralympic medals will include pieces of iron from the tower.

The Eiffel Tower, a major Parisian landmark, has seen a surge in visitors leading up to the 2024 Games. Two cranes were used to lift the 30-ton ring structure between the first and second floors. The rings will be illuminated nightly with 100,000 LED bulbs through the Paralympic Games, which start on August 28.

The Paralympics will feature 4,400 athletes from 180 countries competing in 549 events across 22 sports, with many events held near landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, Versailles, and the Grand Palais.
