Prime Minister Robert Abela has confirmed that bars will remain close beyond the previously predicted deadline.
The PM has ruled out a curfew and a lockdown but has said that new measures will be in place ahead of Carnival in February.
The government is also going to announce aid packages for people who’ve had to keep their business closed for months.

Malta has registered 138 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours from 3,248 swab tests, while 128 patients have recovered. This information was announced by the official Facebook page of Malta’s Ministry for Health.
As of Monday 25th January 2021, 21,172 vaccine doses were administered of which 1,463 were 2nd doses.
To date, Malta has registered 16,999 COVID-19 cases in total, of which: 14,104 have recovered, 255 died and 2,640 are still active.
Following Robert Abela’s announcement that bars will not reopen as planned, the Prime Minister also stated that carnival measures are to be announced as authorities fear that masses will flock to Gozo in February and consequently cause another surge in COVID-19 cases.
The issue was previously being discussed in parliament while associations such as the Malta Chamber and Malta Entertainment industry and Arts Association (MEIA) support the introduction of health restrictions for Carnival weekend.
However, the PM ruled out the introduction of a total lockdown, curfew on establishments or the closure of schools.
