Prime Minister Robert Abela of Malta asserted Malta’s stance on the Single Market’s fairness and addressed critical issues of competitiveness and peace during the Informal European Council Summit in Brussels.
Highlighting the importance of addressing challenges while upholding the aspirations of all Union citizens and businesses, Prime Minister Abela emphasized the need for a Single Market that works equitably for everyone. His message resonated with various European leaders as they engaged in discussions on competitiveness and the Single Market.
Key conclusions drawn from the summit underscored Malta’s consistent advocacy for a fair Single Market, particularly in sectors like medicine, and the ongoing support for small and medium enterprises. Notably, there was a call for streamlining procedures by reducing bureaucratic hurdles by 25%, a move endorsed by the Maltese government.
The Summit also saw discussions on the necessity of a competitiveness pact within Europe, aiming to facilitate sustainable business operations and transitions towards digitalization and environmental sustainability. Former Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta presented a report on the Single Market, which Malta pledged to scrutinize closely following Letta’s consultations with the Maltese government.
Prime Minister Abela stressed the importance of genuine equality within the Single Market, ensuring that smaller Member States and those on the periphery, like Malta, have equal opportunities. He reiterated concerns raised by Malta regarding the drafting of legislation within the Union, advocating for a nuanced approach that considers the diverse impacts on different states.
In addressing geopolitical tensions, the Summit delved into the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East, with particular attention to the conflict between Israeli forces and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Malta reaffirmed its commitment to peace and urged against excluding Middle Eastern parties from discussions, citing the risk of further escalation.
Discussions also extended to the relationship between the European Union and Turkey, encompassing trade cooperation and broader geopolitical concerns affecting Member States such as Greece and Cyprus.
Prime Minister Abela’s participation in the summit underscores Malta’s proactive role in shaping European policies and advocating for fairness and peace within the Union. As discussions continue, Malta remains committed to fostering a Single Market that benefits all its citizens and businesses while promoting stability and cooperation on the international stage.
