Prime Minister Robert Abela this morning announced that his government has recommended a Presidential pardon for three students and a University of Malta lecturer charged in relation to ethical hacking activities.

The decision, he said, fulfils a political commitment to deliver justice.

The students had reported a security vulnerability in Malta’s student app, FreeHour, in 2022.

They were later charged with unauthorised access after requesting a bug bounty, a common practice in ethical hacking. Their lecturer, who had reviewed the email they sent to the app’s developers, was charged as an accomplice.

In his statement, the Prime Minister said the students and their lecturer acted with good intentions and should not have been left to face criminal proceedings alone.

He stated that the State must address such realities, and used the Cabinet’s prerogative to recommend clemency.

Jul 1 2025 Share

Funding from the Local Councils Cultural Activities Scheme, issued by the Local Government Division, will support 35 cultural events across Malta and Gozo by the end of this year and the beginning of the next.

The announcement was made by the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, Alison Zerafa Civelli, alongside the Director General of the Local Government Division, Emil Vassallo.

“Our aim is to have these activities spread throughout the year, not only during the summer months but at other times as well. These events offer our communities the opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends. Many began as small initiatives and have grown into events eagerly anticipated by Maltese and Gozitan alike. For this reason, the government will continue to act as a catalyst for these schemes through the Local Government Division,” the Parliamentary Secretary stated.

On Sunday 2 June, at least 18,000 pairs of children’s shoes were laid out in Stadhuisplein (City Hall Square) in Almere, the Netherlands, as a striking memorial to Palestinian children killed in Gaza since 7 October 2023.

The tribute formed part of the 12th annual commemoration by Dutch solidarity group Plant an Olive Tree.

The display featured rows of empty shoes, teddy bears, and banners reading “Let Gaza Live”.

The names and ages of the children who lost their lives were read aloud during the moving ceremony. Volunteers handed out brochures and spoke with members of the public to raise awareness of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Organiser Esther van der Most, Director of Plant an Olive Tree, told Anadolu Agency that the event was both a tribute and a call to action.

She expressed hope that such demonstrations would eventually become unnecessary, saying, “Even if the bombings in Gaza were to stop today, our struggle will continue until Palestine is entirely free.”

A similar protest in Utrecht in March saw 14,000 shoes displayed. Since the war began, more than 56,530 Palestinians, including over 17,400 children, have been killed in Gaza.
