In a letter to participants at the EU Youth Conference in Prague this week, Pope Francis has advised young Europeans to eat less meat in order to help the environment. He stated that meat was a luxury and an environmental problem and invited his young audience to choose a life of “dignity and sobriety.”
He continued on by saying “There is an urgent need to reduce the consumption not only of fossil fuels but also of so many superfluous things,” and “In certain areas of the world, too, it would be appropriate to consume less meat: this too can help save the environment.”
This last sentence is quite significant as Pope Francis is from Argentina, the country where people consume the most meat in all of South America and is one of the biggest beef producers globally.
According to many, Pope Francis is the most progressive pope the Vatican has ever seen and that is why the organization Million Dollar Vegan asked him to abstain from eating any meat in Lent of 2019.
However it was reported that the Pope did not give up meat that Lent but Paolo Borgia, a senior priest, did talk on his behalf saying : “[Pope Francis] appreciates the concerns and care for the world, our common home, which prompted you to write to him.”
