New Sliema Ferry Land Facilities Completed

New Sliema Ferry Land Facilities Completed

Infrastructure Malta has recently wrapped up the construction of state-of-the-art facilities for sea travelers along the Sliema waterfront.

These facilities have been meticulously crafted to provide passengers with shelter while awaiting their journeys, alongside a dedicated ticketing room and various amenities aimed at enhancing safety and accessibility.

The agency’s contractors have successfully completed the sophisticated quay structure, extending nearly three stories underwater and supported by robust concrete piles drilled deep into the seabed.

Equipped with mechanized gangways, the quay facilitates seamless embarkation and disembarkation of ferries for passengers, eliminating the need for vessels to be tethered before the boarding process.

This advancement enables simultaneous boarding, thus optimizing service efficiency. Notably, the newly built facility in Sliema can accommodate sea ferries of up to 40 meters in length.

Following the successful completion of a similar project in Bormla, Infrastructure Malta is actively working on further infrastructure developments to expand this public transport mode beyond the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour, extending towards St. Paul’s Bay through the construction of a new quay in Buġibba.

Funded partially by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union, this €5 million initiative aims to enhance passenger safety while utilizing alternative sea transport between Bormla, Sliema, and Valletta.
