Pod of dolphins spotted swimming on the way back from Hoffriet

Videos sent to this newsroom show the spectacular moment Rebekah Pellegrini and her friends spotted an entire pod of dolphins off the coast of Hoffriet. A bay in the south of Malta, the pod was spotted yesterday around 2 in the afternoon as the boat made its way back from the bay.

There seems to be several dolphins, surfacing and swimming alongside the boat Pellegrini was on. Gliding elegantly below the surface level, the marine mammals have become a much more common site in Maltese waters. Some attribute this to the lessening sea pollution and boats due to the pandemic.

Whatever the case may be, the dolphins were an amazing sight who treated those present with their friendly and beautiful presence!

Minister of Tourism welcomes two Manchester United legends to Malta

The Minister of Tourism Clayton Bartolo has recently welcomed Manchester United legends Denis Irwin and Bryan Robson to Malta. Denis and Bryan also paid a visit to Malta’s Manchester United supporter’s club, where they got a chance to see Manchester United memorabilia and meet local Red Devils fans.

The two former players also lead a training session with other Maltese coaches at Mellieha FC. They coached young players and gave them tips on when it comes to playing football on both a local and a larger international stage.

Surely an amazing experience for the young footballers to get a chance to meet and try to impress two former Manchester United players. The Mellieha players weren’t just training under two legends but also official Manchester United coaches. The duo surely gave them one of the best training sessions possible. Clayton Bartolo cited on his Facebook account how happy he was about meeting Bryan Robson and Denis Irwin, and for the young players who got to enjoy the once in a lifetime meet up.

Alien sea creatures invading Mediterranean due to climate change

As climate change continues to impact the world’s weather patterns, it was revealed that there are other consequences we don’t notice when it comes to marine life. Speaking to TVM, Professor Alan Deidun revealed how alien creatures have replaced indigenous marine life as huge bouts of heat hit both Malta and the Mediterranean as a whole. Sea temperatures have sky rocketed to above 30 degrees Celsius, meaning that the Mediterranean Sea is close to becoming a tropical sea.

Many sea creatures which crossed the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean would die off in winter as sea temperatures dropped. Sea temperatures however are not dropping as drastically in winter, resulting in these species surviving and reproducing. This means native species have increased competition against creatures like blue swimmer crabs and Rainbow. Deidun even emphasised eating some of these alien species as it would bring the population under control. This should be done with caution however, due to some being poisonous.

57 COVID-19 cases registered with 37 recoveries

Malta has registered 57 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours from 2,656 swab tests, while 37 patients have recovered. No deaths were registered in the past 24 hours. This information was announced by the official Facebook page of Malta’s Ministry for Health.

As of Sunday 22nd August 2021, 791,292 vaccine doses were administered of which 410,884 were 1st doses. 409,183 people are currently fully vaccinated.

To date, Malta has registered 35,831 COVID-19 cases in total, of which: 34,312 have recovered, 436 died and 687 are still active.

Mater Dei Hospital is currently treating a total of 39 COVID-19 positive patients, 3 of whom are in the ITU.
