Delia and Borg Face Off in Nationalist Party Leadership Race

Jun 29 2025 Share

The deadline for nominations for the Nationalist Party leadership has officially closed, confirming a two-horse race between former party leader Adrian Delia and rising Gozitan MP Alex Borg.

Despite earlier reports suggesting a mutual agreement that only one of the two would contest, Borg made a surprise move by submitting his nomination, even after Delia had already declared his intention to run. The unexpected development sparked speculation of a rift between the former allies.

Both Delia and Borg have denied any breakdown in their relationship when questioned by local media, insisting that there is no bad blood.

However, several reports have suggest otherwise, with many speculating that tensions have indeed emerged between the two.

The leadership contest now raises an important question for the PN’s tesserati: will they back Delia, the experienced former leader aiming to restore stability and rebuild the party, or throw their support behind Borg, the young MP promising to usher in a new generation focused on a winning mentality.

Recent polls appear to favour Borg, but with the party’s future direction on the line, all eyes will be on who the general party members ultimately decide.

History of Mnarja Celebrations and Why Malta Celebrates It

Jun 29 2025 Share

L-Imnarja, officially known as Lejl ta’ San Pietru u San Pawl (Feast of Saints Peter and Paul), is one of Malta’s oldest and most culturally significant celebrations.

Its origins date back to the 16th century, during the time of the Knights of St John, although the feast itself is rooted in even older Roman and Christian traditions.

The word Mnarja is derived from the Latin word luminaria, meaning “illumination,” referring to the bonfires and candlelight that once lit up the festivities.

Traditionally celebrated on the 29th of June, the feast honours Saint Peter and Saint Paul, two of Christianity’s most important apostles.

Historically, Mnarja was celebrated at the Mdina Cathedral and later expanded to include countryside festivities at Buskett Gardens. It became a rare day when peasants and farmers could come together to eat, drink, and enjoy traditional għana (folk singing), rabbit stew, and horse or donkey races.

Today, Mnarja is still marked by agricultural shows, folk music, and religious observances, especially in Buskett. It remains a unique blend of rural tradition, national identity, and religious devotion, a celebration of Maltese heritage, unity, and resilience.
