“PN-PL Have Nothing To Celebrate”: ADPD’s Sandra Gauci

"PN-PL Have Nothing To Celebrate": ADPD's Sandra Gauci
Jun 9 2024 Share

In a press conference held at the vote counting hall, Sandra Gauci, Chairperson of ADPD – the Green Party, declared that neither the Labour Party (PL) nor the Nationalist Party (PN) have cause for celebration.

Gauci pointed out that the decision of one hundred thousand individuals to abstain from voting, along with the votes cast for independent candidates, signifies a widespread loss of confidence in traditional parties as pillars of the democratic process.

Gauci highlighted the fear many citizens have of aligning with political parties due to concerns about potential repercussions on their future prospects. This apprehension is magnified by an atmosphere of nepotism and corruption, which is driving people, especially the youth, away from political engagement.

Despite both PL and PN celebrating their respective achievements – PL for a general election win and PN for their best-ever European Parliament election performance and reduced margin – Gauci stressed the need for a credible opposition. She committed to continuing ADPD’s efforts to unite like-minded individuals, referencing past collaborations like the merger of AD and PD, to foster a more effective political alternative.

According to sources close to Malta Daily, a gap of less than 10,000 after 50% of counted votes is expected; the information remains unofficial as half of the remaining votes still have to be counted.

Indications have shown that Roberta Metsola reportedly secured double the required vote quota in a strong performance by the European Parliament President.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Robert Abela addressed a crowd of Labour supporters at the PL headquarters in Hamrun, stating that from tomorrow, he will be rolling up his sleeves to provide a better version of the PL.
