Jun 23 2025 Share

Louise the turtle was transported to Xrobb l-Għaġin’s Nature Park & Wildlife Rehab Centre after she was inadvertently caught by a fisherman 15 miles out of Ċirkewwa.

Louise had swallowed a fishing line and hook, which a veterinarian will try and remove today.

The loggerhead turtle is also missing her right rear flipper, likely due to a previous old injury.

The fisherman, Wildlife Rescue Team Malta explained, refrained from intervening directly upon realising the predicament.

Instead of cutting the line or taking matters into his own hands, he contacted the rescue team and met the volunteers in St Paul’s Bay.

In Malta, it is illegal to keep animals like turtles as pets. If you spot any of the wild animals that we rescue injured or in danger, please call the Wildlife Rescue Team on 99999505.

Swimming In Xlendi Bay To Be Avoided For Health Concerns

Swimming In Xlendi Bay To Be Avoided For Health Concerns
Jun 23 2025 Share

The Environmental Health Directorate would like to inform the public that swimming at Xlendi Bay is not recommended until further notice.

After heavy rain on 20 June 2025, water from the Xlendi Valley, flowing down from Rabat and other parts of central Gozo, carried soil and other materials into the sea.

This may have affected the water quality and could be a risk to people’s health.

Environmental Health Officers are taking water samples from four points around Xlendi Bay to check if it’s safe. For now, it’s not clear how long this warning will stay in place.
