Politico Shines Light On Possible Metsola PN Leadership

Politico Shines Light On Possible Metsola PN Leadership
Jun 11 2025 Share

‘A path has opened up for European Parliament President Roberta Metsola to vie for the Maltese premiership after Nationalist Party leader Bernard Grech resigned on Tuesday.’

That’s what international news platform Politico wrote in one of its latest blog pieces.

‘Ahead of national elections in March 2027, pressure is mounting within the Nationalist Party to appoint its most popular politician to face off against Prime Minister Robert Abela and wrest the government away from the center-left Labour Party after 12 years tainted by corruption scandals’, wrote journalist Max Griera.

Communicating with a representative from the Nationalist Party, Politico was informed that ‘there will be pressure on Roberta to come over for sure.’

‘“She is seen as the solution because she is accepted by most factions within the party, her track record and policies have been resounding,” added the official, granted anonymity to discuss internal party matters.’

The blog also quotes a Times of Malta Poll which was issued in February 2025, revealing how almost half of PN voters want her as party leader.

MIDI Denies Government Allegations Of Contract Breach

MIDI Denies Government Allegations Of Contract Breach
Jun 11 2025 Share

The Government of Malta has started legal proceedings against MIDI plc, claiming the company did not meet its obligations in a contract signed in 2000. That agreement gave MIDI a 99-year lease on land at Tigné Point and Manoel Island.

In a judicial letter filed in court, the Government said MIDI failed to complete the required work on time and must now pay penalties.

It also made clear that it will not extend the project deadline or give up any rights under the contract. The move is described as a first step towards returning Manoel Island to the people, as promised by Prime Minister Robert Abela.

MIDI has firmly denied the Government’s claims. The company says the contract includes clauses that allow for more time—at least ten years—for the development to be completed.

It also argues that because a full permit for Manoel Island has not yet been issued, the project timeline is effectively on hold.

MIDI said it will strongly defend its position in court but remains open to working with the Government to reach a solution that meets national goals while protecting the company’s legal rights.
