PN Standing MP Darren Carabott has criticized the government amidst a significant spike in cab prices and prolonged waiting times. Recently , cab fares have surged, with some users reporting prices doubling and extended waiting periods. This comes amid news that numerous work permits for third-country nationals have been refused, reducing the number of availble drivers.

Darren Carabott highlighted that the government’s unplanned distribution of work permits has led to economic instability. He emphasized that decisions should be based with long-term vision, and consultation, which he claims were ignored. Carabott also criticized the Minister for Home Affairs, Security, and Employment, Byron Camilleri, for blaming the private sector on social media.

Drivers are arguing that the fare increase are necessary to ensure fair wages, particularly during the peak tourist season, while users express frustration over the increased costs and waiting times. Carabott’s statements underscore the broader debate on the balance between economic policies and their repercussions on the public.

Jason Micallef to Contest For PL Party Affairs Deputy Leader

Jason Micallef to Contest For PL Party Affairs Deputy Leader
Aug 2 2024 Share

Jason Micallef, former Labour Party secretary- general, has officially announced his candidacy for the position of deputy leader for party affairs. Despite  the abolition of his former post by Joseph Muscat in 2010, Micallef remained an active Labour supporter and a notable advocate for Muscat, who is now facing corruption charges.

The deputy leader election, scheduled for September 13, seeks to appoint a non-MP to this influential role. Micallef, with a background in broadcasting and politics, stated, “This was not an easy decision. After extensive discussions with party members, including leader Robert Abela, I realized my experience could contribute to Labour’s renewal.” Micallef’s political journey began in 1994 as a local councillor for Mosta, followed by his tenure as a secretary-general  from 2003 to 2009, and later leadership roles in media and cultural projects, including the Valletta 2018 Foundation.

Insiders assumed that Foreign Minister Ian Borg is the likely front-runner for Labour’s deputy leader race. Until recently, there were no clear contenders for the deputy leader for party affairs position, although former MEP Josianne Cutajar has been mentioned as a possible candidate by some sources.
