The dog is led around and trained to walk in between the owner’s legs, sit and follow orders – all with the promise of a treat of course!

And treated they are for they follow the instructions like the good dog they’ll grow up to be!

How Did Maltese Get The Word Misħun? Linguist Explains

How Did Maltese Get The Word Misħun? Linguist Explains

In his latest explainer, linguist Kurt Rumbajsa explained how the Maltese language got the word ‘misħun’ – which is used to describe hot water.

The word has its origins in Arabic, wherein the word water is ‘ma’, whereas ‘l-ilma’ (with an article) becomes al-ma.

The Maltese language combined the two words and essentially ‘forgot’ that they were once separate. The same happened, Kurt explains, with ‘misħun’.

The word ‘ma’ was combined with the adjective ‘sħun’ (hot), giving us ‘ma-sħun’.

Kurt hypothesises that this could have happened with words like ‘mifhum’, ‘minqux’ and ‘mibdul’.
