PN Leader Visits San Ġwann Local Community

On Thursday, February 29th, 2024, the Leader of the Nationalist Party, Bernard Grech, dedicated his evening to engaging with the community in San Ġwann, reaffirming his commitment to close collaboration with both Maltese and Gozitan residents through grassroots initiatives.

During this visit, he had the privilege of interacting with numerous locals, alongside stakeholders and workers in the area.

Through these conversations, he gleaned valuable insights into the daily challenges and concerns they face, notably the strains imposed by the high cost of living.

Highlighting the importance of such encounters, Grech reiterated his dedication to fostering open dialogue that resonates with and addresses the needs of the community.

Discussions with the Leader of the Nationalist Party revealed stakeholders’, workers’, and residents’ discontent over the lack of consultation regarding developments in the square.

They stressed the necessity for comprehensive studies to ensure that any changes made preserve residents’ well-being. This sentiment arises amidst concerns about excessive development, which has brought about safety issues and heightened traffic congestion in the locality.

During the visit, elderly community members voiced their worries to Bernard Grech about national security and called for greater accountability from politicians and government bodies.

They also highlighted recent developments following the Jean Paul Sofia Inquiry, expressing concerns that the concerns of young people are being overlooked, with business proceeding as usual without addressing underlying issues.

Joining the Leader of the Nationalist Party on this visit were Nationalist Members of Parliament representing the district, as well as candidates for the European Parliament and Local Council elections, along with members of the Regional Committee.

Prime Minister Visits Ongoing Cottonera Regeneration Projects

In Cottonera, significant projects are underway to enhance the area, making it more attractive and accessible. These efforts follow a recent visit by Prime Minister Robert Abela to Isla, Bormla, and Birgu, where he observed ongoing projects and community initiatives. During his visit to the Capuchin Convent in Kalkara, Abela stressed the importance of collaboration among Local Councils, entities, and corporations to benefit Cottonera’s residents and visitors.

In recent years, Cottonera has seen a continuation of regeneration projects, including the restoration of iconic structures like guard towers, bastions, and the main entrance of Isla. Additionally, Birgu is witnessing the installation of two new bridges under Sant’Anglu, one of which provides pedestrian access to historically significant areas. Meanwhile, in Kalkara, an upcoming project will create an open square in front of the parish church, further enriching the heart of the locality and serving the community.

Prime Minister Robert Abela remarked that the ongoing regeneration efforts also focus on preserving Cottonera’s distinctive character. He expressed gratitude to the Capuchins for their role in restoration efforts, highlighting their dedication to preserving the area’s heritage. Abela emphasized the importance of communities enjoying a high quality of life and services, citing initiatives like the Active Aging Center in Bormla, which has been serving the elderly.

Abela also commended the contributions of associations to community life, particularly noting government support for the Birgu Regatta Club to enhance its operations. He underscored the pivotal role of Local Councils in fulfilling residents’ aspirations, reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting and investing in communities.

Surf N Turf Restaurant Malta Closes Doors

Iconic St Paul’s Bay restaurant ‘Surf N Turf’ has officially closed its doors after having become a landmark food spot in the Maltese locality.

Taking to social media, the Mediterranean restaurant owners explained that they are immensely grateful for having run it for seven years, building up a connection with their guests and customers.

‘We would like to announce that yesterday marked the last day of operation of Surf N Turf.

Before we bid farewell to our culinary nest, we must give thanks to those who have been part of our journey from the day Surf N Turf opened its doors.’

‘Our appreciation is truly beyond words. Your love, understanding, and unwavering belief in our dream have been the foundation upon which our restaurant was built and we truly thank you for the sacrifices you’ve made and for always prioritising Surf N Turf.’

‘In closing, we cannot express enough how grateful we are for the love, faith and support you have shown us over these unforgettable and fruitful seven years. You have left an indelible mark on our hearts, and your presence will be sorely missed.’

16 Year Old Nina Briffa To Run For Local Council Elections

A 16-year-old girl, Nina Briffa, has received approval from the Nationalist Party to stand as a candidate for the local council in Qrendi, making her the youngest candidate endorsed by the PN to date.

Briffa currently holds the position of president in the PN youth wing Teamstart, a role she was elected to in May, having previously served as the organization’s public relations officer.

However, Briffa is not the youngest candidate nationwide; Izak Catania De Giovanni, who turns 16 soon, is set to run as a Labour candidate for Fgura’s local council. Catania De Giovanni, the son of Labour MP Katya De Giovanni, also aims to make history as one of the youngest councillors ever elected.

This distinction is currently held by Carlos Zarb, who was 17 when elected to the St Paul’s Bay council in 2019.

Briffa shared her gratitude for the opportunity to run for public office on Facebook, acknowledging Nationalist Party leader Bernard Grech and the party’s executive for their support.

Additionally, Briffa was recently elected to the student council of De La Salle sixth form, where she is a student.

Malta made headlines in December as the first EU country to permit 16 and 17-year-olds to become mayors and deputy mayors following unanimous parliamentary approval of new legislation. Under this law, councillors under 18 who secure the most votes from the majority party can assume the roles of mayor or deputy mayor.
