Jason Micallef upset over Malta’s event measures after packed Eurovision

May 19 2021 Share

Chairman of the Valletta Cultural Agency took to Facebook to express his concern regarding the fact that the Eurovision kicked off its first semi-final with a packed audience, whereas Malta still does not allow such events to take place. He asks whether the science in Rotterdam is far more advanced than that in Malta and states that he can no longer understand the local situation.

He asks who, how and why Maltese authorities will not allow cultural activities of 50, 100 or 200 people in theatres and stadiums which can accommodate around a 1000 throughout all of June. Micallef points to herd immunity, which, despite being a sought after goal, still isn’t enough to bring a return to organised events soon.

Public outrage after Caqnu’s €30 million tax discount

Public outrage after Caqnu’s €30 million tax discount
May 19 2021 Share

Charles Polidano, known more famously as ic-Caqnu, struck a deal with government tax authorities to acquire a huge discount on his €40 million tax bill. The taxes – some of which pending since 1990s – were cut from €40 million to less than €10 million. Times of Malta reported the news on Wednesday and stated that sources claimed the original tax bill would have ‘crippled’ the construction magnate ‘beyond repair.’

Most of Polidano’s wealth was acquired through property – even though parts of it are subject to administrative or legal proceedings. Polidano managed to rack up €700,000 in daily fines through works at Montekristo, prompting the Planning Authority to halt illegal works at the Estates.
