Pick Pocket Steals Over €7K: Arrested At Malta Airport

Pick Pocket Steals Over €7K: Arrested At Malta Airport
Jun 29 2024 Share

Continuous investigations tied to a number of pick-pocketing crimes led to the arrest of a 41 year old Romanian woman on Thursday evening.

The woman forms part of a criminal circle that is internationally organised and commits pick-pocketing crimes on people gathered in touristic zones.

The criminals use the crowds to be able to steal the belongings of a person.

Investigations showed that between the 8th and 23rd of June of 2024, the woman had committed more than 20 thefts.

The targets were tourists, primarily in Valletta, Imdina and St Paul’s Bay, where the woman would steal wallets filled with money. Over €7,000 in cash were stolen in total.

The investigations led the police to establish the woman’s identity, with her being arrested on Thursday at the airport whilst attempting to leave the country.

The woman is being kept at the Floriana General Lockup and is expected to be taken to court today at around 1100hrs.

Transparent Black Bags For Mixed Waste Next Week

Transparent Black Bags For Mixed Waste Next Week
Jun 29 2024 Share

As of Tuesday, mixed waste must be disposed of in transparent black bags to allow enforcement officials to check contents without opening them.

Regulations from last year require waste separation into three colored bags: white for organic, grey or green for recyclable, and black for mixed waste.

Businesses improperly disposing of waste face a €75 fine, increasing to €150 for repeat offenses; households face a €25 fine, doubling to €50 for repeated violations.

Starting July 1, mixed waste will be collected in transparent black bags on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) encourages this transition, with a grace period for compliance.

Regular black bags can still be purchased but not used for mixed waste. Since new regulations in 2023, there has been a 23% reduction in mixed waste and a 35% increase in organic waste due to improved waste separation and collection schedules.
