Local media personality and activist Peppi Azzopardi took to social media on Wednesday to state that the administration of Corradino Correctional Facility did not allow a prisoner to enter into a Caritas rehabilitation programme but ‘let her commit suicide’.
The Times of Malta had confirmed that the 29-year-old wanted to follow a Caritas programme but was not allowed to do so due to ‘the current legislation’. The female prisoner had been found unconscious in her prison cell after a suicide attempt only two weeks before dying in hospital on Sunday.
It has been reported that she had a drug problem and was serving a two-year sentence after admission of six counts of fraud and theft back in February.
