The Nationalist Party (PN) held a press conference in regards to the ‘major security breach’ following a theft of 226kg of drugs from a high-security facility within the Armed Forces of Malta’s (AFM) Safi Barracks.
At a press conference held outside Parliament, Shadow Ministers Albert Buttigieg and Graziella Attard Previ stood in front of a large pile of packages representing the stolen drugs to highlight the scale of the issue.
The PN questioned how such a massive quantity of drugs could be stolen from a secure military facility without anyone noticing or taking responsibility.
They stressed that the incident should serve as a serious warning to the government, arguing that national security has been severely compromised.
The fact that only a small portion of the stolen drugs has been recovered offers little reassurance to the public, they said.
Additionally, the party criticised the Police Commissioner’s press conference, stating it failed to provide clear answers regarding the heist, the arrests made, and the security measures in place.
They also condemned the Prime Minister for rejecting a parliamentary debate on the issue and a Motion of No Confidence in Minister Byron Camilleri, who oversees the AFM.
The PN concluded that political responsibility must be taken for the incident and reiterated calls for Camilleri’s resignation.

The Office of the Prime Minister has released the terms of reference for an administrative inquiry investigating the circumstances behind a drug theft that took place at the AFM’s Safi Barracks on Saturday night.
A total of 225kg of cannabis resin was stolen from a container that was being stored there on behalf of the law courts, as it was evidence in a magisterial inquiry. The stolen drugs were part of a larger seizure intercepted at Malta Freeport in June.
The inquiry, led by retired judge Geoffrey Valenzia, is set to conclude by March 14 and aims to:
Examine the facts, procedures, legal framework, and systems that led to the court exhibits being stored under the AFM’s custody.
Assess whether adequate security measures were in place.
Investigate the actions taken by different entities involved in the case and determine any connections between them.
Provide recommendations on necessary regulatory and administrative improvements.
Additionally, Judge Valenzia has been asked to advise the government on whether his findings should be made public, considering judicial and security concerns.

The historic city of Isla is set to come alive with the vibrant colours of Carnival on Friday, February 28, as a special event takes centre stage.
The announcement was made by Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government, Alison Zerafa Civelli, alongside Isla Mayor Clive Pulis and Director General of the Division for Local Government, Emile Vassallo.
This lively celebration is not just for children but will feature music and dance performances by Carnival groups, along with an exciting show by renowned singers Glen Vella and Tiziana Calleja. The event will also include music by DJ Charles Field, ensuring a fun-filled atmosphere for all attendees.
Parliamentary Secretary Alison Zerafa Civelli emphasised that this event is part of a larger series of activities organised by local councils throughout the week and into the following one.
She noted that this year will see a record number of events hosted by local councils across Malta.
“The Division for Local Government is providing various schemes that enable councils to organise such events, allowing communities to celebrate Carnival within their own localities. These activities also complement the national festivities in Valletta,” she said.
Mayor Clive Pulis reaffirmed Isla’s commitment to hosting diverse events for residents and visitors, particularly in the Cottonera region. He thanked the Division for Local Government for launching initiatives that promote cultural awareness across Malta and Gozo.
