PBS fined €3,610 for airing insensitive Marsa murder footage

The Public Broadcasting Services has been ordered to pay €3,610 for airing graphic footage from a murder scene in Marsa in July.

The footage of a medical team administering CPR on victim Mahmoud Adly was aired during the 8pm news bulletin on Sunday 24th July on both TVM and TVM News+.

The Broadcasting Authority said in a statement that the state broadcaster admitted to all charges brought against it as the PBS was found in brach of several public broadcasting laws.

The victim was reportedly stabbed four times by Sudanese national Al Mahy Ezzo Saaed, who is being charged with murder in court. The audience had not been warned in advance of the sensitivity of the images.

Maltese goalkeeper Maya Cachia joins Venezia Calcio Femminile

Yet more Maltese women footballers making international waves! Goalkeeper Maya Cachia is officially joining Venezia Calico Femminile after signing a deal for the 2022/23 season.

Times of Malta revealed that Cachia will be joining Italian football and furthering her sports career with the team.

This marks her second year in Italy’s third-tier after being part of Crotone in her debut season in Italy. She went on to play five games between Serie C and Coppa Italia -Serie C. She made her debut in the latter against ASD Coscarello.

Taking to social media, Cachia expressed her joy for the new opportunity, saying: ‘The next chapter begins. Beyond grateful to be joining this ambitious club while eagerly waiting to stat defending these new colours.’

Sunken Hephaestus shipwreck to draw in divers and tourists to Maltese waters

The 60m tanker known as the Hephaestus which ran aground on the Qawra coast over three years ago was pulled back into the sea off Gozo to serve as a diving attraction.

The ship had run aground on the feast of St Paul’s Shipwreck on February 10th 2018 and was stranded on the rocks for six months before being patched up and towed to the Grand Harbour.

The ship was found too costly to repair, but was then cleaned in preparation for the scuttling off Xatt l-Aħmar. The operation to sink the 855-tonne vessel was a delicate operation, with many watching the scene.

The operation was handled by Malta Tourism Authority in collaboration with the Professional Diving School and the Gozo Ministry.

Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri and Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo both commented on the ship’s scuttling.

Bartolo said that this provides a new opportunity for divers to enjoy a brand new attraction whilst also drawing in foreign visitors to the site. Camilleri highlighted how this site will be added with the already established 55 sites in Gozo to strengthen the industry.
