Parliament Speaker Anġlu Farrugia has condemned the protest staged by Graffitti activists during this year’s Budget presentation.
Last Monday, Graffitti members disrupted Finance Minister Clyde Caruana’s Budget speech by unfurling a banner and chanting, “We dance to the developers’ tune,” criticizing the government for prioritizing developers’ interests.
The protest came shortly after the Cabinet decided to begin a partial review of the local plan for the Villa Rosa site in St George’s Bay, where developer Anton Camilleri plans to build two high-rise towers.
Following the incident, Farrugia announced new security measures for the Strangers’ Gallery in Parliament. Effective immediately, visitors attending parliamentary sessions must leave their bags and mobile phones at reception.
“Apart from passing through the scanning machine and registering with reception, visitors will also have to deposit their bags and mobile phones, which will be returned upon exit,” Farrugia stated to MPs on Tuesday.
The Speaker also criticized the activists, saying their actions displayed a lack of respect for Malta’s Parliament as an institution.
