“Brave, fearless and pulsating”, the pinkish, reddish tone of ‘Viva Magenta’ has been chosen as Pantone’s colour of the year for 2023.

Since 2000, the colour company has picked a colour (or two) every year to reflect on the past whilst anticipating trends, growth and cultural development for the following months, and 2023’s pick is all about optimism, ambition and groundbreaking virtual possibilities.

Cambridge art historian and author James Fox stated that the Viva Magenta is a plausible choice for a period “when everything feels very grey, dark and murky, and lots of people have lost hope”, calling it a colour which captures the resilience of the human spirit.

From Harry Styles’ magenta Gucci Blazer at the premiere of ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ to Charlize Theron’s eye makeup during her portrayal of Clea in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, shades of 2023’s colour of the year are as prevalent as ever in pop culture.

On the technology side, Pantone Color Institute vice president Laurie Pressman stated that the pick also alludes to the growth of the virtual world, with the company launching an immersive experience in Miami called the “Magentaverse”.

What do you think of 2023’s colour of the year?

‘Gaslighting’ chosen as Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Year 2022

'Gaslighting' chosen as Merriam-Webster's Word of the Year 2022
Dec 3 2022 Share

As 2022 comes to a close, many brands & organisations begin to unveil what defined their 2022 and Merriam-Webster dictionary is no exception, choosing ‘gaslighting‘ as their word of the year.

The term ‘gaslighting’ reportedly dates back to the 20th century and means “psychological manipulation of a person usually over an extended period of time that causes the victim to question the validity of their own thoughts, perception of reality, or memories.”

While the decision sadly shines a light on the state of the world in 2022, the act of gaslighting seems to have become more common than ever before, with many within communities of LGBTQ+, women, people of colour and more using the word to describe acts of oppression.

Searches for the word blew up in 2022, with Merriam Webster themselves reporting an increase of 1,740% in searches.

South Korea beat Portugal to make it to Round of 16

Dec 2 2022 Share

South Korea have managed to qualify to the knockout stages after narrowly beating Portugal with a last minute goal.

This means that both Uruguay and Ghana have been knocked out in what will be described as a disappointing tournament for both teams.

The game started with Portugal dominating the Asian scoring an opener as early as the 5th minute from attacking midfielder Ricardo Horta.

However South Korea managed to equalize in the 27th minute after Ronaldo from a Korean corner  mistaking gave the ball to Kim Young-gwon  who smashed it past Diogo Costa.

In the dying minutes of the game Korean striker Hwang Hee-chan shocked the entire footballing world giving South Korea the lead against Portugal and a place in the knockout places when nobody expected it.

South Korea will now most probably face Brazil in what will be a tough task to complete whilst Portugal will play one of Serbia, Cameroon or Switzerland.
