A major regeneration initiative currently underway in the social housing areas of Santa Luċija is delivering a tangible environmental and aesthetic transformation. The project, being carried out by the Housing Authority in collaboration with Housing Projects Solution Ltd, aims to improve the physical environment and undertake essential maintenance across the area.

During a recent visit to the site, Minister for Social and Affordable Accommodation, Roderick Galdes, highlighted the significance of the project, stating: “With an investment of approximately €520,000, this project is having a direct impact on 56 families living in these housing blocks, as well as on the wider Santa Luċija community. Everyone benefits when a cleaner and more attractive environment is created.”

The regeneration work spans a total of seven social housing blocks and includes façade enhancements, upgrades to communal areas, and roof refurbishments.

Minister Galdes emphasised the government’s broader strategy, saying: “These regeneration projects in the social housing sector, which we are implementing in various localities across the country, reflect our government’s holistic approach to quality of life. This encompasses not only an individual’s home but also the community environment in which they live. Projects such as these help to uplift families, support mental well-being, and safeguard human dignity by enhancing the spaces we call home.”

Project Green has officially commenced regeneration works at Ġnien tal-Kmand, a historic public garden in Qrendi originally established in the early 19th century by Civil Commissioner Sir Alexander Ball. The initiative follows the garden’s recent transfer to the Qrendi Local Council.

Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness, Miriam Dalli, visited the 1,600-square-metre site together with Qrendi Mayor David Schembri, members of the local council, and representatives from Project Green.

The regeneration project will include landscaping, improved accessibility, and enhanced safety features, with the aim of restoring the garden as a tranquil public space. “This garden has been closed for years, but we are now reopening its gates to the community,” said Minister Dalli. “It’s about preserving our heritage and giving something back to the 3,150 residents who live within a ten-minute walk.”

Benjamin Vassallo, Head of Design at Project Green, explained that the plan will strike a balance between historical preservation and environmental revitalisation. “We’re working closely with the council to breathe new life into this space while respecting its historical significance,” he said.

Mayor Schembri added that the first phase of the project includes tree pruning, planting, and the installation of new gates.

Prime Minister Robert Abela has inaugurated a new aircraft hangar at Malta International Airport, marking a significant milestone in Malta’s aviation industry. The new facility belongs to Falcon Aviation Engineering, a Maltese family-run company now celebrating its 20th anniversary.

During the ceremony, Dr Abela highlighted Malta’s ambition to continue developing the aviation sector, which aligns with the Malta 2050 Vision. This national strategy includes clear targets to grow the aviation industry’s contribution from €700 million to between €2.8 billion and €3.3 billion over the next ten years.

“This is another investment in our country – this time in the aviation sector by a Maltese company that has a new hangar,” said the Prime Minister. He commended the Zarb family’s determination and resilience, which have not only driven Falcon Aviation’s success but also helped raise Malta’s profile in global aviation.

The €5 million investment, rolled out in two phases, has resulted in a 1,200-square-metre hangar built in under 20 months. This facility will support aircraft maintenance, including work on sustainable aircraft models. Dr Abela also mentioned plans to expand Malta’s aircraft register and diversify maintenance services into areas such as cargo carriers and executive jets, reaffirming Malta’s ambition to be a maritime, logistical, and aviation hub.

The Prime Minister also referred to initiatives like Malta Enterprise’s “Choose Aviation” campaign at MCAST, which aims to attract young people to the sector by investing in Maltese talent and training.
