Over 6000 passengers carried by Gozo Fast Ferry in single week

During its first week of operation, the Gozo Fast Ferry carried more than 6,000 passengers on a high-speed voyage between Valletta and Mgarr, Gozo. The service also added extra trips to cope with the massive demand which rose during the long weekend. Since the fast ferry’s launch on Wednesday of last week, 3000 people downloaded the company app which lets them buy tickets for the boat rides.

The company stated that the positive feedback was overwhelming, with the increased demand showing how people were very much ‘itching’ for such a service. People also used their Tallinja card to simply tap-and-board without having the need to pre-book a ticket. As tourism reopens following the pandemic’s massive pressure on the sector, the company expects that the service will continue to receive such demand and usage.

The Malta BBQ League announced!

Are you a lover of all things BBQ? – from the food, to the atmosphere and everything related to the sound of sizzling burgers and sausage? The Malta BBQ League has just been announced and is looking for teams of two people to participate in the competition. The league will kick off during the summer on TVM, with Danusan hosting the first ever Maltese edition.

Professional Maltese chefs will be invited to choose who will move on to the final rounds of the competition, with €10,000 worth of gifts for the victors. Malta has registered 1 new case of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours from 1,658 swab tests, while 3 patients have recovered. No deaths were registered in the past 24 hours. This information was announced by the official Facebook page of Malta’s Ministry for Health.

As of Wednesday 9th June 2021, 564,718 vaccine doses were administered of which 330,970 were 1st doses. 243,252 people are currently fully vaccinated.

To date, Malta has registered 30,578 COVID-19 cases in total, of which: 30,086 have recovered, 419 died and 68 are still active.

Decriminalisation of prostitution believed by many to benefit organised crime

A phone survey conducted by MISCO on behalf of Malta Women’s Lobby found that the majority of people believe that the decriminalisation of prostitution will benefit organised crime on the island. The survey consisted of a random sample of 404 respondents and found that three of four respondents believe that prostitution believe the decriminalisation would benefit organised crime through human trafficking, illegal drug market and money laundering. The survey also found found that;

96% of people believe that those working in prostitution are at risk of physical harm; 98% believe in a high risk of sexual violence; 97% believe that there is a risk of mental health trauma; and 99% believe sexual health problems are also a risk. 80% of respondents also believe that prostitution legalisation will increase social sexual violence. The Malta Women’s Lobby stated that the results are a clear message to the government not to legalise the practice and called for the implementation of the Equality Model – essentially decriminalises the prostitutes and criminalises the buyers.
