According to newly released research by the National Statistics Office, it was revealed that 51.7% of Maltese households in 2021 afforded going abroad at least once a year.
The European Statistics on Income and Living Conditions survey collects several indicators related to general health and well-being.
According to the section ‘Share of households by their ability to afford certain items for the children in the household, 51.7% of households reported that they afforded to go on holiday away from home at least one week per year.
Meanwhile, 13.7% reported that the household could not afforded whereas 34.6% reported that they could not go abroad for other unspecified reasons.
Of course, 2021 saw the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, dropping airport traffic numbers significantly during that year. However, the numbers have been consistently improving, with Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo reporting that, in January of 2023, the amount of tourists coming to Malta improved significantly to 136,167.
As per outbound tourists in 2021, well over 300,000 outbound flights registered by Maltese, a 54.2% increase over 2020.
