Over 45,000 people want Jeff Bezos to stay in space

A petition has launched which wants to stop Jeff Bezos from re-entering Earth after his space strip next month. The campaign grew to epic proportions in just a week after the tongue-in-cheek petition was launched. Since then, several copied petitions emerged, amassing 45,000 signatures between them, all saying Jeff Bezos should not come back to Earth.

Most petitions gave conspiracy theories as reasons to keep the Amazon co-founder away from Earth. Some said that Bezos is hellbent on global domination, with others saying that this is our opportunity to prevent his evil plan. Bezos, the world’s richest man, is set to journey into space alongside his brother on board the New Shepard. Some people reasoned that since Bezos is using his money to enjoy space travel instead of tackling global hunger or disease issues, he should stay off Earth. Some even suggested ‘yeet[ing] him into the sun.’

Property prices between Gozo and Malta increasingly converge

A persistent price growth across Gozo has been reported, indicating a continued price convergence between Malta and its sister island. A property market report conducted by Dar and EY analyses the latest web-based listing for residential and commercial property markets for 2021’s first quarter. Most residential property listings have maintained their asking prices, the report showed. This lead to only minimal changes in the recorded average price.

If one looks at quarter-on-quarter- price changes however, they range between -1.6% to +2% across all localities. Half of all localities registered an overall average listing price increase. The largest reductions of asking price were recorded for the Northern regions, whereas persistent price growth was seen in the Gozo property market. Terraced houses and houses of character experienced the largest number of price reductions in terms of year-on-year value changes. The pandemic could have impacted to this factor.

2,308 foreigners working illegally under 255 employers

According to a parliamentary question posed to Finance Minister Clyde Caruana, it was revealed that 255 different employers were caught hiring foreigners without a work license in 2020. Of these 255, 130 employers have since regularised the position. Jobsplus found 2,308 foreigners working in Malta without the license, all working under 255 different employers. Jobsplus can, under the Employment and Training Services Act, only take action against irregular employers, not workers.

130 employers have regularised the positions and brought the practices in line with the law. This translates to 318 foreigners working regularly. 12 employers were taken to court by police with the remaining 113 employers to be taken. Caruana revealed in a separate parliamentary question that the numbers of foreigners working in Malta until October 2020 was 70,024.

Destiny awarded ‘Best Female Artist’ by ESC Radio

The Eurovision Song Contest Radio awarded our very own Destiny Chukunyere the award for ‘Best Female Artist’ in their 2021 awards. The category was fiercely competed for as Destiny was in a neck-and-neck race against Barbara Pravi from France. In third place is VICTORIA from Bulgaria.

For best song, Gjon’s Tears came first, followed by Maneskin’s ‘Zitti E Buoni’. Destiny’s ‘Je Me Casse’ placed 4th in this category, once again followed by Pravi’s Voila.

Despite placing in 7th place at the Eurovision Song Contest, Destiny’s talent was widely recognised, opening up a plethora of avenues for the young singer.
