Over 370,000 babies were born on New Year’s Day; eight of them in Malta

An estimated 371,504 babies were born on New Year’s Day around the world, as announced by the United Nation’s agency for children UNICEF.

Eight of them were born in Malta, as Mater Dei CEO Celia Falzon reports the birth of four girls and four boys.

Appealing for world citizens to sustain the Earth and build “a fairer, safer and healthier world for children”, UNICEF executive director Henrietta Fore stated that “Children born today will inherit the world we begin to build for them—today.”

It has been reported that the move hadn’t been done sooner due to EU rules not allowing a tax drop below the already-established 5%.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak had expressed commitment in abolishing the tax in the March 2020 budget in what, stating that ‘sanitary products are essential so it’s right that we do not charge VAT’.

Boris Johnson’s father is seeking French citizenship after Brexit confirmation

Stanley Johnson, the father of British PM Boris Johnson has received nods from across Europe after his bid for French citizenship following Britain’s departure from the EU.

Previously a British MP who backed the UK’s stay in the Union, Johnson received praise by French secretary for European Affairs Clement Beaune, who highlighted that this move is a sign that most Britons still love Europe.

Johnson, 80, is the son of a French-born mother and grandmother, stating that his bid for French citizenship was an act of reclaiming what he once had.
