Over 100,000 people vaccinated with second dose

Following the news that 50% of the Maltese adult population has received the vaccine, it was also announced that more than 100,000 people have been vaccinated with the second dose. With a total of 313,279 vaccines administered, 100,686 of said total were second doses.

The vaccine rollout is helping authorities with the goal of achieving population immunity from COVID-19 and to reduce several health measures currently put in place. With over 40s applying to get their jab, the roll out has been immensely effective in mitigating the spread as daily cases decrease substantially. Malta is currently using Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson and Moderna vaccines.

15 COVID-19 cases registered with 58 recoveries

15 COVID-19 cases registered overnight with 74 recoveries

Malta has registered 15 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours from 1,449 swab tests, while 58 patients have recovered. This information was announced by the official Facebook page of Malta’s Ministry for Health.

As of Monday 26th April 2021, 313,279 vaccine doses were administered of which 100,686 were 2nd doses.

To date, Malta has registered 30,189 COVID-19 cases in total, of which: 29,354 have recovered, 413 died and 422 are still active.

Houses sold for €1 in another Italian town

Castiglione di Sicilia, a town on the slopes of Mount Etna and near the beaches of Sicily’s east coast, is joining the trend of selling houses for just €1. With the pandemic putting the idea of vacations in doubt, various Italian towns have been selling houses at the cost of a coffee. With most of the houses up for auction being in the oldest parts of the town, around half are ruined, with the ones which are better off will be sold off starting from €4,000.

Mayor Antonio Camarda hopes to revitalise his town, which shrunk in population from 14,000 in the 1900s to 3,000 today. The scheme has approximately 400 properties which require minimal renovation. Camarda said that emails have already been sent from investors and potential buyers, showing a potential interest.

Beach crowds leave huge mess on Golden Bay

Activist Cami Appelgren uploaded a video to Facebook showing a large amount of trash left on the sand of Malta’s Golden Bay. After beaches were utterly filled with people over the weekend, Appelgren stated ‘To the ‘next generation’ people who spent their eve at Golden bay and left this – I thought you’d know better’.

She added that after 17 hours of work she would not like to end her day picking up this large amount of rubbish. She thanked the few who picked up their trash. She concluded that as park rangers they ‘took the discussion with many people and tried our best to educate and also enforce. But it has to come from [kids] homes as well’ as she urged parents to educate their children.
