OSCE Chair-in-Office and Maltese Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, Ian Borg, reiterated the commitment to fostering dialogue across regions as a crucial means to effectively address present challenges and uphold peace and security. Minister Borg made these remarks during a visit to Serbia, where he commended the accomplishments of the OSCE Mission in Serbia.
In Belgrade, Minister Borg met with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, acknowledging the vital cooperation between the OSCE and Serbia on essential commitments such as rule of law, human rights, democratization, and media freedom. Minister Borg highlighted Serbia’s progress in implementing critical reforms, particularly in electoral processes based on recommendations from the OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR).
During his visit, Minister Borg engaged with various organizations supported by the OSCE Mission in Serbia, including media associations, youth groups, and an environmental law clinic providing specialized training to law students. He also visited a drop-in shelter supporting Roma children and youths in education, highlighting the OSCE Mission’s inclusive education efforts.
Accompanying Minister Borg were Maltese Ambassador Natasha Meli Daudey, Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia Ambassador Jan Braathu, and other officials from the OSCE and Maltese Foreign Ministry. Malta assumed its first-ever 12-month Chairmanship of the OSCE in January 2023, under the theme ‘Strengthening Resilience, Enhancing Security’, reaffirming the organization’s pivotal role in addressing pressing global issues.
