Only €1.60 For Eggs Spent By Former ABBA Leader For Election

Only €1.60 For Eggs Spent By Former ABBA Leader For Election

Ivan Grech Mintoff ran his entire campaign for the MEP elections with a declared expense of just €1.60, which he spent on a carton of eggs.

In his sworn statement to the electoral commission, Grech Mintoff explained that his only expenditure went towards purchasing eggs, which he used in a protest during a university debate, criticising the unequal speaking time allocated to candidates. He smashed an egg on stage before storming out in protest.

His protest attempts extended beyond that event, as he was stopped from bringing eggs into a television studio for another political debate, claiming they were essential for his protest.

Earlier in the campaign, he had thrown eggs near the prime minister during a Labour Party event, which brought further attention to his campaign.

All election candidates must report their campaign expenses, and Grech Mintoff’s running mate, Tania Gauci, declared no expenses at all.

On Tuesday morning, Ħamrun’s main road was shut down in both directions as firefighters responded to a fire inside a residence.

The blaze, which is thought to have been caused by a candle left burning, broke out around 8 a.m. on St Joseph High Street. Fortunately, no one was inside the house at the time.

By 8:45 a.m., Transport Malta reported that firefighters from the Civil Protection Department were actively working to extinguish the fire.

To facilitate the emergency response, both lanes of the road were closed. Authorities advised drivers to use alternative routes to avoid the area.

Applications Close For 5th Edition Of Muzika Muzika

Applications Close For 5th Edition Of Muzika Muzika
Oct 1 2024 Share

On Friday, September 27, applications closed for the fifth edition of Mużika Mużika, organized by Festivals Malta. Once again, there was a very positive response with numerous submissions from composers, singers, and local bands across various musical genres.

Festivals Malta CEO, Frans Agius, stated, “As in previous years, Mużika Mużika has received a very positive response from local artists, with a strong number of submissions. This clearly shows that Mużika Mużika has established itself as a leading festival in our country’s cultural calendar, not only among our audiences but also with the artists, composers, and authors, without whom this festival would not be possible. I thank everyone who submitted their application.”

The process now continues with Mużika Mużika’s Board and the Festivals Malta team, entering the next phase of evaluation sessions by an expert jury. The top 30 songs will be chosen, after which they will be performed live with a backing track before a different jury. This year, 16 semifinalist songs will compete at the festival in March next year. Unlike previous editions, the first night on Thursday, March 27, will not be an eliminatory round to allow participants to enjoy the festival more fully.

Festivals Malta and the Mużika Mużika Board would like to thank all artists for their submissions and wish them success.

The semifinalists will be announced following the live auditions in October. Mużika Mużika 2025 will take place from March 27 to 29 next year.
