One third of COVID-19 patients suffer ‘brain disease’

Researchers reported in the Lancet Psychiatry journal that around one in three people who were infected with COVID-19 have longer term mental health or neurological symptoms. 34% of COVID-19 survivors received a diagnosis for a neurological or psychological condition within six months of infection. Anxiety was the most common diagnosis found in 17% of those treated, with mood disorders following at second place at 14%.

Co-author of the new study Maxime Taquet stated the rate increased progressively as the severity of the illness increased. It increased to 39% in patients who were hospitalised. The study help light the way for how healthcare systems ought to treat COVID-19 survivors.

Beijing has, for the first time ever, become the new billionaire capital of the world as it houses more billionaires than New York City. According to Forbes’ annual World’s Billionaires List for 2021, the Chinese capital gained 33 new billionaires in 2020, bringing it to a total of 100 billionaires. The Big Apple has 99 billionaires, as it added only seven new billionaires in the same time span.

New York City is 40% of the size of Beijing, with the former having a population of 8.4 million and the latter roughly 21 million. Zhang Yiming, founder of TikTok parent company ByteDance, is Beijing’s rightest resident and is worth $35.6 billion. New York’s wealthiest is ex-mayor Michael Bloomberg whose net worth reaches $59 million.

According to a Reuters tally, the latest global resurgence of COVID-19 infections along with variants has shot the global death toll up to 3 million. Health officials worldwide blame the more resistant and infectious variants of the virus detected first in the UK and South Africa, with the death toll peaking in Brazil and India. Even though it took more than one year for the global death toll to reach 2 million, the other 1 million were added in approximately 3 months.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) acknowledged that Brazil, which accounts for one in every four deaths worldwide each day, has an immensely overwhelmed healthcare system. The European region’s 51 countries has totalled the highest number of deaths at nearly 1.1 million.
