Researchers reported in the Lancet Psychiatry journal that around one in three people who were infected with COVID-19 have longer term mental health or neurological symptoms. 34% of COVID-19 survivors received a diagnosis for a neurological or psychological condition within six months of infection. Anxiety was the most common diagnosis found in 17% of those treated, with mood disorders following at second place at 14%.
Co-author of the new study Maxime Taquet stated the rate increased progressively as the severity of the illness increased. It increased to 39% in patients who were hospitalised. The study help light the way for how healthcare systems ought to treat COVID-19 survivors.
