One of Malta's longest June heatwaves is finally over

During the past two weeks, Malta has experienced a record-breaking June heatwave and one of the longest spells of heat in Malta in over a decade.

The Meteorological Office has revealed that there have been five June heat waves over the past 10 years, the majority of which lasting for three days, as opposed to this year’s heatwave which lasted a strong 12 days.

A spokesperson for the office stated that this has been one of Malta’s most prolonged heatwaves, with June 25 being the hottest June day in almost 100 years at a blazing 40.2°C.

The famed ‘Hamrun Jeep’ captured in multiple videos during the Hamrun Spartans Football Club Premier League trophy celebrations in St. Joseph High Street is currently in a wrecked state after multiple people were seen jumping on its exterior on Thursday evening.

The Jeep served as a colour-appropriate platform for revelling Hamrun Spartans supporters after the Spartans’ BOV Premier League trophy presentation following a 30-year wait for Hamrun football supporters.

It has been reported that 124 fines were issued to individuals who reportedly broke COVID-19 regulations during the celebrations, which event also raised nation-wide concerns regarding the country’s current COVID-19 measures.

A former constable for the Malta Police Force has been accused of the rape of a fellow constable and the sexual assault of another constable from the Msida Police Department and has put forward a number of exceptions to annul the accusations against him by the Attorney General.

The former officer, whose name cannot be published due to a court order, is denying the accusations made against him between 2017 and 2019 for sexual acts on a 23-year-old and a 19-year-old constable and is also reported to have previously made rough advances, including the inappropriate groping of the colleagues.

It is also reported that the accused would threaten one of the victims that if she reported him, he would turn the story against her. This newsroom has contacted the Malta Police Force to see whether it will take any measures to ensure a safe environment and an issue like this would not happen again.

Following massive celebrations for the victory of Hamrun Spartans in the Premiere League, police have allegedly fined around 124 persons for breaking the COVID-19 health restrictions. Police spokespersons told Newsbook.com.mt that apart from these 124 individuals, investigations are still ongoing to identify more people who broke the regulations. 

Footage and photos of the mass gathering surfaced online, resulting in the anger of many artists and professional event organisers. MTA spokespersons also told the news portal that no permission was issued for the celebrations to occur. The MTA is also allegedly considering taking action against the organisers after consulting with health authorities and police.
