Three gold medals bagged by Maltese weightlifting star Thornton

Tenishia Thornton is continuing her domination of her 2022 weightlifting campaign as she bags three gold medals at the European Junior Championships in Poland on Saturday.

Thornton competed in the U-17 55kg category, absolutely owning the Snatch, Clean and Jerk and overall standings.

Starting off from the snatch, the Maltese star lifted up to 76kg, 78kg and 80kg respectively, going on to lift 96kg in her Clean and Jerk. This brought her a total of 176kg.

This placed her up 4kg from Italian runner up Ludovica Celine Delia, whose overall total of 172kg came through a best 77kg in the snatch and 95kg in Clean and Jerk. Turkey’s Merve Ilden came in third place.

Thornton’s win comes as part of a streak for the young champion as she continues her literal collection of well-deserved medals. She secured a gold medal at the World Youth Championships in Mexico as well as another at the European Union competition.

Incident between four vehicles leaves man seriously injured

A 25-year-old Marsascala resident has been confirmed as having suffered grievous injuries after an incident which occurred in Triq Villabate, Ħaż-Żabbar at around 1900hrs.

Preliminary investigations showed that the incident happened between three vehicles and a motorcycle.

The vehicles involved were a Mazda Demio driven by a 44-year-old Marsascala resident who was heading towards his home locality; an Opel Corsa driven by a 28-year-old Nepalese man; Hyundai i30 driven by a 65-year-old Raħal Ġdid resident; and a Piaggio Vespa motorcycle driven by the 25-year-old.

The latter three vehicles were driving in the opposite direction, with a 31-year-old Nepalese woman also in the Opel Corsa. Civil Protection officers had to convene on site as some of the victims ended up stuck in their vehicles.

The 65-year-old man did not suffer any injuries, but all the rest were taken to Mater Dei Hospital for further medical assistance. They were all certified as having suffered light injuries, except for the motorcyclist who was confirmed to have suffered grievous wounds. Investigations are ongoing.

Hunting federation hits back at Canadian warnings for tourists visiting Malta

NGO Federation for Hunting and Conservation – Malta (FKNK) has hit back at warnings issued to tourists visiting the Maltese islands in regards to stray bullets and lack of safety.

This follows warnings for tourists to watch out for hunting areas next to campsites as well as dangerous drivers, amongst other things, going viral on local social media.

In their open letter, the FKNK said that ‘incorrectness and seriousness of the several ‘warnings’ given to would-be visitors to Malta, regarding our traditional socio-cultural passions of hunting practices, can only be mildly termed as unbelievable!’

The statement addresses how the hunting season in Malta is open for short duration and well-regulated ‘in conformity with EU nature laws and regulations.’ Any impression that hunting takes place 24/7 is ‘imaginary exaggeration’ it read.

The FKNK also said that the statement; ‘hunting areas, which are rarely marked, often overlap with camping areas’ is absolutely false.

When it comes to stray bullets, the FKNK said that the use of bullets and rifles for hunting purposes is not permitted in Malta. This is because the hunted species consist of migratory game and no big game is present. This means only shotguns with lead-pellet shots are used.

‘Our track record in terms of safety, despite the small size of our islands which are the most densely populated in Europe, is second to none’ it concluded, urging the relevant authorities to correct their website.
