The world’s oceans are turning up the heat like never before, and environmentalists are sounding the alarm.
According to the latest jaw-dropping observations from Copernicus, the European Union’s environmental watchdog, the Earth’s oceans have hit an all-time high in temperatures. We’re talking about scorching waters that have surged to a blistering average of 20.96 degrees Celsius – a record-breaker that’s leaving even the most seasoned scientists flabbergasted!
Why should you care about a few extra degrees in the oceanic thermostat, you ask? The answer. Oceans are the unsung heroes of climate control, soaking up heat like a sponge and giving us a whopping 50% of the world’s precious oxygen.
The extra heat in the water is effecting the air we breath and the species that live inside of it. Scientists are predicting even more temperature hikes in the months to come.
It is worth noting that between 1982 and 2016, the number of oceanic heat waves doubled faster.
