‘Not Alternatives, But One Man Shows’: Alex Borg On 3rd Parties

'Not Alternatives, But One Man Shows': Alex Borg On 3rd Parties
Jan 15 2025 Share

Taking to social media, PN MP Alex Borg addressed the recent discussions surrounding the establishment of a third party.

“One understands the need for something different, and some justify this need by highlight the apathy towards politics, especially in the generation which I (Alex) form part of – the youth.”

“‘Anything but Labour or PN’, I often hear them say.”

Borg said that this thinking does not make sense for him as, he notes, many people stop at the word ‘third’ but ignore the other word ‘party’.

“I’m not seeing organisation but fragmentation. I’m not seeing a goal but ‘protagoniżmu’. I’m not seeing alternatives but lots of one-man-shows.”

“In a party, yes, the discussions are heated. And yes, there are differences. But at the end of the day, because there’s lots of ideas, everything is put on a scale and a balance is reached – something I don’t see these third parties doing. Because there’s no mixing of ideas.”

Borg highlighted how he doesn’t always get his way in such matters, but that is the beauty of politics and the Nationalist Party – “that we share ideas.”

He encouraged people, especially the youth, to enter a party and learn what organisation means. “That you represent but also represent your friend’s ideals.”

MP Suggests Longer School Hours As Malta’s Among Lowest

MP Suggests Longer School Hours As Malta's Among Lowest
Jan 15 2025 Share

After a study published by professors Anna Borg and Liberato Camilleri and commissioned by the National Commission for the Promotion of Equality showed that Malta’s school opening hours are the lowest in the EU, PL MP Edward Zammit Lewis pitched in as to what can be done.

Primarily, the Labour MP suggested that having longer school hours would push the education sector forward and reflect the evolution of society.

A society, he says, wherein women have entered the work force in great numbers to pursue their aspirations. This would also make the most of the investment into ‘state of the art schools’ invested into by the government.

The study itself also recommended a number of work-family life policies, including reviewing policies on early childcare as well as considering paid parental leave as an alternative to early formal childcare during the first year.

The debate has seen commenters take differing views, with some suggesting adjusting work schedules to fit school hours or flexible work arrangements.
