At a national conference held by the Human Rights Directorate at the Parliamentary Secretariat for Equality and Reforms, Parliamentary Secretary Rebecca Buttigieg confirmed that in the coming few weeks a new measure will be introduced which will see people have the right to change their gender.
This will mean that people will be able to change their gender, even on their official birth certificate to non-binary or X.
This a big step for Malta, as till now one could only change their gender from male to female or vice-versa and on their ID card one had the option to not declare their gender.
These new measures will however see people given the option to define themselves as non-binary or ‘X’, not just decide to not declare their gender.
Writing on Facebook, Rebecca Buttigieg stated that “Changing laws is important, but changing the mentality is just as important.”
She also confirmed that “More than 1,700 police officers have been trained on the terminologies and laws that have been implemented in recent years.”
